Meg Lubey

Meg Lubey is an artist from Buffalo, NY, who graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2022 with a BFA in painting and an emphasis in creative writing.

 

While referencing one another, both Lubey’s writing and visual art practice explore the nature of time and mortality, dissecting the way in which we cope with it through documentation and the sharing of our experiences. More specifically, Lubey pulls from the theory of “Queer Time”, referencing the way in which LGBTQ+ individuals rearrange the culturally expected timeline of life and adapt to it in ways that can be personally liberating while also existing as acts of defiance in regards to fast-paced capitalist culture. Lubey challenges conventions of painting by intertwining traditional painting mediums with more unconventional materials such as spackle, embroidery floss, fabric, and other found objects. The combination of the material creates strange, textured surfaces that are reflected in their free verse poetry and prose.

Lubey's work has been shown in multiple group exhibitions such as Push and Pull at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, as well as Coveted at Kaiser Gallery and Stopgap at SPACES, in Cleveland, OH. Lubey has also partnered with The LGBT Center of Greater Cleveland to create and organize Ordinary, a queer, collaborative zine that you can find HERE.
